Specialized S-Works Tarmac 2018 Review

The Specialized S-Works Tarmac is one of the big players in the pro peloton and has bagged many legendary titles over the years. The workhorse of defending World Champion Peter Sagan has been extensively revised for the 2018 season. Let’s see how the S-Works Tarmac stands up against very fierce competition.

For an overview of the test fleet head to the main article: What’s the best road bike of 2018? – 12 race bikes put to the test

With its price tag of € 9,499, the Specialized S-Works Tarmac is not exactly a bargain. However, its many clever features make it the perfect all-round racing bike. The new, aerodynamically-optimized carbon frame, the custom carbon layup, and three size-specific carbon forks are designed to offer a consistent performance across all sizes – this means optimised riding performance and rider-specific geometries throughout frame sizes from 49 to 61! The Californians deliver top pro performance with an explosive mix of high-end components such as Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, direct mount brakes, Roval CLX 50 Rapide carbon wheels, Specialized’s in-house componentry such as an S-Works Fact Carbon seatpost and S-Works SL carbon handlebars, and even CeramicSpeed bearing upgrades in the BB and hubs.

The S-Works Tarmac is the best-looking bike in the entire test fleet. The matte-black carbon frame and the gorgeous carbon look of the spec seem to be melting into each other. The Specialized Turbo Cotton tires with skinwall look are the icing on the cake.

The Specialized Tarmac S-Works gives you a huge endorphin rush from the very first pedal stroke. Thanks to a weight of just 6.38 kg in size 56, the Tarmac nimbly winds itself up the steep hills of Girona; none of the other bikes feels this agile. But that’s not all: the very precise, responsive, and confidence-inspiring handling of the Tarmac impressed us on the downhill too. The Tarmac eats tight turns for breakfast and Spanish switchbacks for lunch, which is partly due to its very short chainstays – 405 mm on a 56 frame. At the same time, the Specialized impresses with very balanced handling; even in extreme situations the Tarmac feels predictable and good-natured, and is therefore a fun option for both pros and beginners.

The S-Works Tarmac is not just damn fast, but thanks to the powerful Shimano Dura-Ace direct mount brakes, it also decelerates extremely well. With the great modulation of the brakes and the outstanding grip of the Specialized Turbo Cotton tires, you won’t miss the performance of disc brakes for a second – at least in dry conditions.

In short, the Specialized S-Works Tarmac offers the best overall performance and ruled the entire test field. On the Roval CLX 50 wheels, the 26 mm-wide Specialized Turbo Cotton reach an effective width of 28 mm and make for a very smooth ride. The extremely grippy rubber compound lends the tires superb cornering traction and excellent damping qualities. The good compliance of the carbon seatpost puts the final touch on the excellent riding characteristics of the Tarmac, which we can only describe as damn fast, comfortable, confidence-inspiring, responsive, precise, and balanced. All of these qualities were proved in our GRAN FONDO Race Session, in which all four test riders nailed their fastest lap on the Tarmac!

even in extreme situations the Tarmac feels predictable and good-natured, and is therefore a fun option for both pros and beginners.

Thanks to the excellent handling qualities and outstanding control in all situations, the Tarmac inspires tons of confidence despite its light construction and ridiculous weight of 6.38 kg. This makes the Tarmac the ultimate racing beast for everyone from beginners to professionals. A well-deserved Best in Test!

Specialized MEN’S S-WORKS TARMAC

The previous Tarmac had an exceptional palmarès—a win in every Grand Tour plus two World Championships—so you might ask yourself “why a new Tarmac?” Well we’ve never been one to rest on our laurels which is why we’re constantly hunting for even the smallest of improvements. In other words we innovate or die. And for this exact reason the new S-Works Tarmac breaks all the traditions of race bike design to create the fastest bike for all conditions.

To get the weight below 800 grams we utilized advanced aerospace composite optimization software to revolutionize the construction and layup of our new FACT 12r carbon. It’s the most advanced material and schedule we’ve ever made—the shape schedule and material optimization allowed us to shed nearly 200 grams. That’s right a 20% reduction in frame weight—the perfect recipe for your next hill climb PR.

In our search to save every last gram the S-Works Tarmac Ultralight also uses a newly developed paint finish that further reduces weight. In combination with our improved preparation process it achieves a paint job that has the same weight as nine gummy bears or 10 grams.

We then further improved our Rider-First Engineered™ technology to ensure that the new Tarmac is stiff and compliant in exactly the right places. With this revamp we also updated the geometry—basing it on countless Retül data points and professional rider input. This enabled us to develop a performance road geometry that perfects the combination of a responsive front end and short wheelbase delivering instantaneous response and optimal power transfer.

And while stiffness aids in the aforementioned compliance must also be utilized for an optimal ride quality. That’s why we designed a seatpost that builds compliance into the upper 120mm where clamping doesn’t happen dropped the seatstays and altered the seat tube shape. We also added tire clearance up to 30mm which translates to a 28mm Turbo Cotton on a Roval CLX 50 wheel. This allows lower pressures for decreased rolling resistance increased traction and more comfort. Altogether these additions still have the Tarmac riding like a true race-machine but just takes a bit of the sting out of those road imperfections. You’ll thanks us on your next long ride.

And while this is all great we know that aerodynamics are the most important thing we can do to make you faster. Both our Bora-Hansgrohe and Team Quick Step Floors Pro Tour riders after all are demanding aero improvements on every bike. With this the aero goal was to discover where we could essentially “add aero for free” by not taking anything away from the hallmarks of the Tarmac design. During the six-month iterative process three areas were discovered where we could do this—a new fork shape dropped seatstays with aero tubes and a d-shaped seatpost and seat tube. The result? A bike that’s approximately 45 seconds faster over 40km compared to other lightweight bikes in the same category. A speed savings that you’ll feel when you’re attacking off the front of the peloton.

This S-Works Tarmac comes ready to race with Shimano’s new Dura-Ace 9150 Di2 groupset with direct mount brakes and the lightweight yet impressively aerodynamic Roval CLX 50s with 26mm Turbo Cotton tires.

The Tarmac has been incredibly successful for Specialized both in terms of race wins and sales.

The new Tarmac replaces the curvy SL5 with a more angular design, with slimmer tube profiles and dropped seatstays, which follow on from lessons learnt on the Venge Vias and Roubaix.

The new frame has lost weight over the last generation, now weighing 733g, over 200g lighter than the SL5. An all-new sub-300g fork is designed to be size specific, so the steerer tube profile changes across the size range to ensure consistent handling.

On the road, the Tarmac feels very familiar, the supersonic speed of the SL5’s handling impressed me hugely, and the new Tarmac feels just as sharp. Where it betters its forefathers is in the hills with its 6.35kg weight, and when weight gets this low you can’t help but feel it when climbing.

The stiffness in the chassis is another huge blessing on steeper slopes, and Specialized has fitted the wide 11-30 Dura-Ace cassette, giving a bottom gear of 36/30, so you’ll keep spinning even on double-digit gradients.

Dave Caudery / Immediate Media

Where the Tarmac really shines is with the comfort levels, the rear end especially feels so much more compliant than before. The new D-shaped seatpost offers sufficent flex and the low-slung frame shape leaves plenty of post exposed to flex too. The carbon bar nulls vibrations, which adds up to a superlight race bike with a smoothness pretty uncommon to the genre.

Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 makes an appearance again, but Specialized has combined it with its own S-Works carbon chainset paired with Praxxis chainrings. The cranks are stiff and the rings run smooth, though I did notice the occasional slower shift from big to small ring compared to some Dura-Ace units I’ve also been testing.

The deep CLX50 wheels from Specialized’s own Roval brand are a fine pairing to the chassis. Their deep, blunt profile, wide rim bed (20.7mm) and low weight (1,429g a pair) impress, as do the supple cotton-cased 26mm-wide Turbo tyres.

Robert Smith Photography

The rims carry and hold speed well and braking from Shimano’s latest Dura-Ace direct-mount rim offerings is impressive in the dry, but can’t quite hit the highs of Zipp’s Showstopper track or Mavic’s iTgMax track in the wet. However, feel is excellent and there are no issues with vibrations.

Threading the S-Works through tight twists and turns, especially downhill, saw me smile from ear to ear. It’s every bit the equal of the best examples of its kind, bikes such as Cannondale’s SuperSix Evo and the BMC SLR01 and Cervélo R5.

You can flick direction changes so quickly, and weight shifts at your hips and a drop of your shoulder are enough to lean the Tarmac over and snap through the tightest of apexes.

The textured matte black paint and contrasting reflective white S-Works graphics are subtle, contrasting with its bold ride quality and handling. Its light weight, speed and sharp handling responses are combined with a composed and comfortable ride to create a truly exceptional bike.

Any bike at this price should be impressive, that the Tarmac does everything so well means it deserves the highest of praise.
