Moustache Eau de Parfum Rochas cologne
I’m relatively new to the world of fragrances, and this was a blind buy along with the “Original 1949” version.
This newer formula from 2018 is definitely created as a sequel to the 1949 fragrance, turning the original from a standalone into part of a set. I find it interesting how this new creation is playing into the trend of needing separation for day/night and cool/warm collections for all our different moods and occasions.
And it works!
This one is definitely a warm flavour – initially I was reminded of mulled cider or warm pie in the cooler autumn months, without being too closely associated with foods. This EDP is comforting and leaves a delicious taste to your nose without being gourmand. There’s no sharp or offensive spices to this, yet it still has that warm and almost spiced feeling without the burn! I imagine that’s the pink pepper as I’ve never heard of such a thing.
Once dried down a bit, there is a nice orange scent to it… But more of a dehydrated candied orange peel you would add to a drink. The vanilla and orange is prominent, but again – not in a way that reminds you of any specific foods. As someone who doesn’t really enjoy the distinct smell of food when I’m not eating, this is a welcomed pace!
I’d say this one is quite moderate, it’s a skin scent after 20 minutes and dries to that warm vanilla-orange scent after an hour. But that part will last for a good 4-6 hours depending on your skin or clothes.
Even though the scent should be most important, I do want to talk about how nice the bottles are as I personally enjoy the visual design as part of the perfume experience; The simplicity in shape is nicely contrasted by the grooves in the glass for a look straight out of the modern mid-century! They look great on my dresser as a functional piece of decor. The thick bottom on the glass gives it an amazing weight, providing quite a strong and “masculine” feeling when held. I did not expect a glass bottle to feel powerful, but here we are. The lid is also quite elegantly heavy, and you can definitely fend off any intruders with this heft haha!
* Now I want to talk about the comparisons of this 2018 EDP with the re-released 1949 EDT. Apologies for covering a bit of both versions in this one review, I just feel they’re quite complimentary to each other so it might be worth reading? *
These two Moustache perfumes are all you need if you enjoy the citrus family, love the option to switch seasonal scents, and want a swell looking display piece! A good compliment if you enjoy the vague sense of taste with your perfumes – the original is like a sparkling lavender-lemonade iced tea for the day, and the newer EDP is a warm mildly alcoholic beverage for the relaxed evening.
In a nutshell, these two Moustache bottles are just “fresh cool citrus” and “cozy warm citrus”. They’re very straight forward and not too thought-provoking. These are pleasant go-to’s you won’t find offensive in an office or night out. Though if you want something more unique and adventurous – you will have to search for a more risky work of perfume as these are better for a reliable daily set.
I highly recommend getting both, not just one or the other. They are definitely a complimentary pair, and can transition well into each other as the day progresses. I can’t guarantee that will be the same experience with similar scents from other companies, as they have their own unique identities they want to establish.
I’d say they’re both mild and calm enough for any time of day/season. But if you want an idea for the slight difference:
• Moustache EDP: Good as a warmer more comfortable scent. Most likely for fall and evenings. Might be a bit too coffee-shop fireplace vibes for late winter though, as I personally would want a crisp wooden scent for that season.
• Moustache Original 1949 EDT: A crisp but light lavender-citrus. Amazing for the green days of spring and hot summer when you don’t want to be sick from heavy syrupy scents. This is a pleasant daytime scent, but the least attractive option for intimate evenings or dates as it’s a bit too clean and sterile with the lemon.
Of course it’s a lot more interesting and trendy to have many options in the vast fragrance categories (as I’m also trying to collect as many different scents as I can afford haha). But I do feel the variety of the Moustache lineup gives a well-done sense of completion if you want to be minimal and stick to just two scents – if you are okay with citruses that is!
For comparison to other brands, in my limited range I would say Moustache EDP has a similar feeling of the “not-quite-vanilla” dry down to the Versace Eros/Eros Flame fragrances. Though not as sugary as those two to me. Versace is a bit stronger and will last a few hours longer, if that is important to you.
**I have not smelled YSL Tuxedo, but I do appreciate this being an affordable option for those who may want to have this orange-vanilla scent family for a more fair price. However I wouldn’t consider it a replacement to Tuxedo, from what I have read. I feel this should be treated as its own individual and not an exact clone if that’s your goal.
