The SecureGuard helps to protect your child’s delicate abdominal area by adding an extra – a 4th – contact point to the 3-point seat belt. By keeping the lap belt in an optimal position over your child’s pelvic bones SecureGuard helps reduce abdominal forces in the event of a frontal collision by up to 35 %*, and at the same time allows your child freedom of movement during the journey.

Britax KIDFIX III M Review

(Last Updated On: September 18, 2019)

Britax’s range of European booster seats has grown yet again! The new KIDFIX III M looks at first glance to be nearly identical to previous models, but it has a few surprises up its sleeve. Let’s take a closer look, and see how it compares to the KIDFIX II XP SICT that we’ve reviewed previously.

CSFTL Quick Stats

High back booster weight range: 15 to 36 kg (33 to 80 pounds)

Lowest belt guide position: 38 cm (15 inches)

Highest belt guide position: 56 cm (22 inches)

Measurements

Width at widest point on base (at the front): 43 cm (17 inches)

Width at narrowest point on base (at the rear): 38 cm (15 inches)

Width at widest point of seat: 55.5 cm (22 inches) with SICT stored; 58.5 cm (23 inches) with one SICT extended

Seating area width (at the back): 30 cm (12 inches)

Seat pan depth: 35 cm (14 inches)

Unique Features

ISOFIT

SecureGuard clip to keep the lap belt low over the pelvis

Extendable side impact protection

Good safety ratings on ADAC testing

Name Changes

The KIDFIX III M follows Britax’s new, sleeker naming scheme. Instead of appending multiple abbreviations – like XP and SICT – onto the end of the seat name, only one letter is used to designate where a seat falls in the lineup. Newer seats from Britax in the EU will all follow this naming scheme.

Features

No XP Pad

The most noticeable difference between the KIDFIX II XP SICT and the KIDFIX III M is that the III M does not feature an XP Pad. The pad often caused belt retraction issues, so it’s not surprising it has gone away for now. Britax has assured us that the KIDFIX III M performs quite well in testing without the pad.

SecureGuard

Like its predecessor, the KIDFIX III M features the SecureGuard clip. Acting as a fourth point of contact for the vehicle seat belt, the SecureGuard clip helps keep the lap belt low on the pelvis. I find it easier to slide the lap belt into the SecureGuard clip before buckling the seat belt, but my son finds it easier to buckle and then tuck the lap belt into the clip when he buckles himself.

Side Impact Protection

The KIDFIX III M features side impact protection that is identical to that on the KIDFIX II XP SICT. It unscrews from the side of the seat closest to the vehicle door to absorb crash forces during a side impact.

ISOFIT

The KIDFIX III M features ISOFIT connectors just like the KIDFIX II XP SICT. The only difference is that the handle to adjust the ISOFIT isn’t quite as obvious because there is no plastic panel at the front of the seat to show where the handle is located. But never fear, it’s still there! The main benefit of ISOFIT is that it isn’t necessary to remember to buckle the booster seat when it isn’t occupied. ISOFIT can also provide some stability to the seat when the child climbs in and out. It isn’t required for use but when it’s not used, the booster seat needs to be buckled at all times to prevent it from becoming a projectile during a crash.

Longer Seat Pan = More Thigh Support

One major difference between the KIDFIX II XP SICT and the KIDFIX III M is that the seat pan on the III M is significantly longer. A common complaint about the II has been that the seat pan is very short, leaving bigger kids with uncomfortably dangling legs. With about 4 cm of additional thigh support, the III M provides much more support that should keep kids comfortable longer. My son, who is on the smaller side, noted that his legs were more comfortable in the III M.

Better Seat Belt Retraction

Another common complaint about the KIDFIX boosters has been that vehicle seat belt retraction is sometimes poor when the booster headrest is on a lower setting, below the car seat shell. The KIDFIX III M has better belt retraction than previous versions, which is great news!

Installation With ISOFIT

First, extend the ISOFIT arms by squeezing the handle at the bottom front of the seat and pulling the arms out the back. Extend them fully, then line them up with the ISOFIX anchors in the vehicle. In some vehicles, the ISOFIX anchors are too deep in the vehicle seat to be easily accessible. If this is the case, the included ISOFIX guides make it easier to access the anchors.

Now, push the ISOFIT arms onto the ISOFIX anchors. You’ll hear and feel a click, and both indicators will turn green.

Squeeze the handle at the front of the seat again and push the entire seat back so the back sits flush against the vehicle seat. The back of the booster is articulated so it can adjust to the angle of the vehicle seat.

Installation Without ISOFIT

Simply place the booster flush on the vehicle seat, thread the vehicle seat belt through the shoulder belt guide, extend the SICT, then buckle. Remember to buckle the booster seat in when it’s not in use to prevent the booster seat from becoming a projectile during a crash.

Headrest Adjustment

The headrest can be adjusted up or down to fit the child. Squeeze the handle at the back of the headrest, then slide it up or down. The manual states that the bottom of the headrest should be approximately two fingers’ width above the top of the child’s shoulders. It’s fine to adjust the height of the headrest without removing the seat from the vehicle, though I find it easier to slide the seat forward before attempting to do so.

Setting Up Side Impact Protection

The side impact protection should only be used on the side of the booster that is next to the vehicle door. Unscrew the side impact protection until it is 5 mm from the door or it’s fully unscrewed.

Fit to Child

6 Years Old

This model is 6 years old, weighs 18 kg, and is 112 cm tall. He previously rode in the KIDFIX II XP SICT, but after a minor crash, that seat has been replaced with the KIDFIX III M. He gets a great fit in the booster, with the lap belt low over his pelvis and the shoulder belt centred over his collarbone. One of the first things he noted when he first tried this booster was that it didn’t have an XP Pad. He was worried that it was less safe, but also very happy to not have the pad, because he found it a bit annoying. After being reassured he was still very safe, he has loved his new booster seat! And, as always, he’s a big fan of having a blue seat. He’s able to buckle and unbuckle himself, though in our BMW i3 he sometimes has trouble if the booster has shifted towards the buckle. In that case, he climbs back out and we pull the booster over slightly so he can buckle and unbuckle with ease again.

Important Information: Where to Find

Expiration: Britax doesn’t specify a maximum period of use.

Manual Storage: A hinged door on the back of the seat conceals a storage compartment designed to hold the manual. In fact, there are 28 separate manuals in there, each in a different language!

Airplane Approval: Like all booster seats, the Kidfix II XP SICT is not approved for airplane use. In addition, it’s a relatively heavy seat and does not disassemble, so it wouldn’t be a great choice for travel.

Overall Thoughts

The KIDFIX III M is a great addition to the Britax booster lineup. It’s easy to use, robust, and fixes many of the niggling issues that some users experienced with previous versions. With the addition of a longer seat pan it will keep kids comfortable even longer, and its versatility means it can fit in most vehicles.

Britax KIDFIX III M review

It is more expensive than cheaper and more basic models, such as Maxi-Cosi’s Rodi series or the Joie Trillo and Duallo models. However, it offers an array of safety features such as SecureGuard to help keep the lap belt in place, and additional side impact protection (SICT).

Britax Römer Kidfix III M is the latest version of the German-British brand’s popular Kidfix range of booster seats. A Group 2/3 car seat, it is tested for kids from 15-36kg, so will last several years, from around 3 years to 12. (Although I would keep my preschooler in a harness and rear-facing for as long as possible.)

Other car seats that offer similar safety features include the BeSafe iZi Flex FIX i-Size, which is the first to adhere to new i-Size testing and costs £249.99, and the Cybex Solution Q-Fix, which is £190.

Tested by:

Anna tested the Britax Römer Kidfix III M with her tall five-year-old daughter on both long and short journeys. They liked it so much the seat is now used on a permanent basis.

First impressions of the Britax Römer Kidfix III M?

When I unpacked the Kidfix III M, it felt sturdy, durable, simple and well-made. I was sent the black version, which is fine by me – I’m not one for over-designed car seats. Function is definitely better than style in this instance.

What age child should go in a Group 2/3 car seat?

A group 2/3 car seat is a high-backed booster, officially suitable for kids from 15-36kg, which is approximately from 3.5 to 12 years. However, 3.5 years is still quite young, and I personally like my kids to face rearward with a harness for as long as possible, so I only started using a high-backed booster just before my daughter turned 5 – and only because she is very tall.

Is the Britax Römer Kidfix III M seat easy to install?

Like other parents, I found the Kidfix III M extremely easy to install. It is intuitive, with clear guides, and it has Isofix connectors that you can use to anchor your seat in the car. It can be used with or without these connectors, which is great if you want to use the car seat in an unfamiliar car, such as a hire car on holiday. Whether using Isofix or not, to use this booster correctly, you need to use the car’s seat belt as it holds the child and seat in place.

Does it feel secure once in place?

Thanks to the Isofix connectors and the back, which adjusts slightly to different angles of car seat backs, I achieved a great fit in my car. It felt very secure, with not much give in the seat.

Does the Britax Römer Kidfix III M car seat feel sturdy?

The Kidfix III M feels lovely and sturdy. The SecureGuard is nicely padded, and the fabric also feels good quality.

What safety features does the Britax Römer Kidfix III M have?

The Kidfix III M has some great safety features including the SecureGuard, which helps you position the lap belt securely over your child’s pelvic bone. I really like this feature – it helps with the transition from toddler to booster seat, as it takes the guesswork out of the seatbelt fastening. The car seat also has additional side impact protection, which you twist out of the seat on the side of the car door. This adds a great extra level of safety and reassurance. The seat’s safety credentials were also given the thumbs-up by other parents.

Is it easy to strap your child into the car seat?

It is very easy to guide the seat belt around your child, but it will always be a bit fiddly finding the seat belt connector to click the seat belt in place. I find this with all high-back boosters I have tried, as I need to lean over my daughter to connect it. It’s great that the guides of the Kidfix III M are so straightforward, and I loved the SecureGuard that helps you position the lap belt correctly, anchoring it between your child’s legs at the right position.

What do you think of the size of the Britax Römer Kidfix III M car seat?

I think the seat is reassuringly chunky and it protects the child well. At this stage, I wouldn’t want anything flimsier. Having said that, it wouldn’t work with all models, or for those who need three seats in a row.

How heavy is the car seat?

At 7.5kg, the Kidfix III M is on the heavier side for a booster seat, but it doesn’t seem that bad to lift and move around – a point backed up other parents, including those we surveyed*. There are much lighter boosters on the market, but I think the weight is manageable and it wouldn’t prevent me from taking it on holiday to use in hire cars.

Will your child fit in it until they are 12 years old (36kg)?

I would trust the seat to keep a 36kg child secure, and it feels like it would last a while as the seat is so adjustable. The extended seated area is also specifically designed to make it comfortable for older kids, so I think we will have a few more years with this seat.

How comfortable is the Britax Römer Kidfix III M for your child?

My daughter was very comfortable in the Kidfix. It seems a good size for her, and her legs were well supported. She even fell asleep after an exhausting morning one day, which she rarely does, and her head was well supported when she did. Plenty of parents, including those surveyed, also praised the seat’s comfort factor.

How many positions does the headrest have?

The headrest extends from 67cm to 85cm, so there is a lot of room for adjustment as your child grows.

Is the Britax Römer Kidfix III M easy to clean?

Yes, the cover is definitely easy to remove – more so than with other seats I have tested. I would be happy taking this off and refitting as needed, and so would parents we surveyed.

What do you think of the design?

The design doesn’t stand out, but it is solid and sleek. It comes in some nice colours, including a bright ‘Fire Red’, as well as a more bold ‘Letters’ print, so I’m sure you can find a style that suits you. I also liked that the extra side impact protection is extendable – you can easily twist it out, or twist it back in place for transit. You always need to have it extended at the car-door side for extra safety.

Are there any accessories available?

You can buy a spare cover and a summer cover.

Who is this car seat best for?

This is a great final car seat for any child. It makes the transition from harnessed seat to booster much easier and straight-forward.

Is the Britax Römer Kidfix III M value for money?

With an RRP of £180, the Kidfix III M sits somewhere in the middle of the market for this product type. Considering that you get superior side impact protection and a super-easy and safe-to-use car seat, with the option of an Isofix connection, I think it’s worth its price tag. It will last a number of years, so I think it’s great value – and plenty of other parents agree.

Would you recommend this car seat?

Yes, I would definitely recommend it. My daughter will be in it until she’s a teenager!

Where can I buy the Britax Römer Kidfix III M?

The car seat is available from Uber Kids and Buggybaby.

MadeForMums verdict:

A great car seat that provides fantastic safety features and excellent comfort for your growing child. It will see your preschooler through to their teens, and we will happily use ours for a number of years.

Britax KIDFIX III S review by Loren And The Babes

The car seat. An essential for most families but trying to find the right one is like navigating a car seat minefield. So many brands, stages and styles to choose from, although of course safety is always the top priority.

We were beyond excited to be given the opportunity to test out and review the Britax Römer KIDFIX III S for Willow, which was impeccable timing as she had outgrown her old one. When looking at car seats I’m always drawn to the more well known brands such as Britax and it is a brand that I have used before with Cub so already I felt confident in the seats capabilities.

It’s a stage 2/3 high backed booster seat, suitable for children between 15kg – 36kg, that’s around 3.5yrs right up to around 12yrs. Sounds like a massive difference, right? Well the KIDFIX III S features a large seating area with a v-shaped backrest, allowing it to grow with the child. The seat is also beautifully padded and automatically adjusts to match the angle of the vehicle seat, so combined with the ergonomic shape it provides the ultimate comfort, and I think you’ll agree that Willow looks very comfortable in it!

It’s 54cm wide, 43cm deep and ranges between 67 – 85cm tall. As you can see from the measurements and the pictures, it allows all of that comfortable space for the child without being big and bulky.. Cub can still fit in the middle seat of our Vauxhall zafira without being squished, although he is still prone to pokes and prods from Willow. It’s also pretty lightweight so swapping it between cars is easy, a big plus for us as we’re always going between our own car, my mams and even my next door neighbours!

It is so easy to install that there’s practically no installation other than chucking it {not literally} into the car, plus it’s isofix compatible which I love. Now I’d never used isofix before, Albies car seat is isofix but I was on lockdown hospital so Jack and my mam had to take it to be fitted. Luckily this seat comes with very clear instructions and between me and Jack we managed to get it all secured into the car. You don’t have to use it with isofix so if your car doesn’t have it it’s not an issue, you can simply use the actual car seat belt. But as we do have the option to use isofix, that extra protection is just invaluable.

Now I can’t lie I’ve never been a fan of booster seats, you know the ones with no backs on them at all. But being a highbacked booster seat I have peace of mind knowing that Willow is protected from her head to her hips. Her head and neck is supported and protected by a padded headrest, which is something that’s incredibly important to me. It also provides comfort for those sleepy car journeys where little eyes can’t quite stay open and heads begin to nod. I’ve been there before with both Cub and Willow, that sick feeling you get in your stomach when you see their heads flopped over! But we’ve had none of that in this seat, it’s magic! The first ever trip we made with it was a three and a half hour drive down to Weymouth, so it has well and truly been put to the test and I’m beyond happy to report there hasn’t been a single head flop. The headrest is also very easy to adjust; it can be done with one hand {pretty handy if you’ve got one of the babes cradled in the other} whether the childs already sitting in it or not.

Willow used to be a nightmare strapping her into her car seat. She hated the harness in it and so every time we wanted to go out I’d have to wrestle her into the car kicking and screaming. Now with this little beauty, you just use the actual cars seatbelt which goes through the booster seat itself and the belt guides {I’ll come to those in a second} and then just clips in as normal.

Something else particularly clever that this seat boasts is the SecureGuard Feature. This adds extra security by keeping the lap belt in the correct position over the child’s chest and pelvis to protect their little tummies in the event of a frontal collision. It also has a shock absorbing pad which, in an accident, works as a buffer to prevent the impact from childs chin onto their chest. It also provides a little extra cushioning around the seatbelt itself.. brilliant!

And that’s not even all of its security features! Let’s talk about the SICT – the advanced side impact protection. This perfectly thought of little device reduces the impact by bringing the seat closer to the door, and will absorb the impact energy should there be a side collision. How ingenious! This is possibly one of my favourite features as it takes away that side vulnerability.

It’s available in a range of colours, we opted for grey so that it would still look nice without exposing too many crumbs and marks. I always start off saying absolutely no food or drinks in the car seats but let’s be honest there’s nothing like a food bribe when the “are we there yets” start ten minutes into an hour long journey. The seat covers are of course removable and washable, and you can also purchase spare covers online.

Having the knowledge that my babe is not only comfortable but safe and secure whilst making any journey, particularly long ones, is a huge weight lifted. Willow also absolutely loves her “big girls seat” and is now excited to go in the car, rather than the usual meltdown that we used to have. I would absolutely, without a single doubt, recommend this booster to anyone and everyone who is looking for a 2/3 stage seat!

Customer Review of Britax Römer Kidfix 3 S High Backed Booster

Our customer, Amber Parslow, has so kindly written a review of the Britax Römer Kidfix 3 S that her daughter Esme uses. Read what she has to say about the popular high backed booster below.

Anyone who knows me, will know I am very particular about car seats. My children were and are rear facing for as long as possible.

Esme outgrew her extended rear-facing seat (up to 25kg) at 6.5 years old and I did an inordinate amount of research on the best forward-facing high back boosters.

This seat is a group 2/3 seat meaning it is suitable for 15kg – 36kg. Approximately 3.5 years to 12 years, however, I would always advocate staying rearward facing as long as possible.

If you are considering moving to a high back booster earlier, please make sure your child is “booster trained” meaning there are mature enough to know to sit up straight, not lean, pick anything up or slouch. They should also not fall asleep in the car.

Britax is a great make, known for its above and beyond safety testing and quality build. When this seat arrived, I was pleased that it lived up to their reputation.

The base cushion of the seat is large to allow for growth, well padded, and it adjusts to angle of the seat. One of the reasons we went for this seat, is if it’s going to last until around 12 years old, it should be comfortable!

The instructions were simple, and it was quick and easy to install, and using the isofix feature the seat feels very secure. (My friend uses it without and the seat still feels very secure with her child in, but it requires the seat to be packed away if she’s not in it as it isn’t secured.)

The features of this seat, over others, that particularly interested me were…

Shock absorbing XP-PAD on the seat belt, which not only adds cushioning but also works as a buffer to protect your child’s chin hitting their chest in the event of an impact.

SecureGuard feature (which I’ve never seen before). This sits in-between your child’s legs and adds a 4th contact point to the 3-point seat belt, which keeps it in the correct position over the chest and offers increased protection to the abdominal area.

SICT – side impact protection. This clever device twists out on whichever side is closest to the door, to create less space to absorb more impact.

This seat comes in a variety of colours, and removable washable seat covers. Which is great for us, as our children are often covered in all sorts of mess from painting or splashing in muddy puddles!

We are really pleased we chose this seat, Esme is happy and comfortable, and the extra features put this seat above and beyond its competitors. I have recommended this to many friends as a perfect high back booster when your child is ready to make the transition.

Britax Römer Kidfix III S Car Seat Purple

Product description Britax Römer Kidfix III S Car Seat

Automatic translation Original description available here

The stylish and comfortable KIDFIX III S extends the popular and successful KIDFIX range. With its new design and longer seating area it offers more comfort for small as well as taller children – even on longer journeys. It also combines the proven safety features SICT, SecureGuard and the new version of its XP-PAD, ensuring children from 3.5 to 12 years are safe and comfortable.

Features:

New XP-PAD:

Britax Römer has developed a new version of its XP-PAD, a shock-absorbing foam pad that covers the area of the security belt and protects the child´s neck and chest in case of collision. The XP-PAD was optimized to offer a better retraction of the seat belt, a better comfort for the child, an updated design, maintaining same safety behavior in case of frontal impact.

According to the tests realized by the manufacturer in 2019, this extra protection patented by Britax Römer diverts up to 30 % of the energy forces away from your child’s neck and prevents neck injuries by reducing the movement of the head. Moreover, it provides a comfortable cushioning to the chest when your child is restrained.

SecureGuard:

The SecureGuard helps to protect your child’s delicate abdominal area by adding an extra – a 4th – contact point to the 3-point seat belt. By keeping the lap belt in an optimal position over your child’s pelvic bones SecureGuard helps reduce abdominal forces in the event of a frontal collision by up to 35 %, and at the same time allows your child freedom of movement during the journey.

Advanced frontal and side impact protection:

The Britax Römer highback boosters protect your child in 3 ways: the seat shell provides head to hip protection for your child, especially in the event of a side impact; the upper and lower belt guides provide correct positioning of the seat belt; and the padded headrest provides safety and comfort for your child’s head and neck.

Plus, thanks to the SICT (Side impact Cushion Technology), the KIDFIX III S offers superior protection to your child in the event of a side collision. It reduces impact forces by minimizing the distance between the car and the car seat and deforms to absorb the energy before it reaches your little one. To benefit from the protection, simply adjust the SICT on the side of the car seat closest to the door.

Ergonomically optimized seating area:

To provide maximum comfort, even for taller children, the seating area is approximately 20% larger than similar models. The improved shape and extra-soft padding make for a comfortable and ergonomic seating position on longer journeys.

Easy adjustable, ergonomic headrest:

Our V-shaped headrest is designed especially for older children, when using the 3-point seat belt to secure them in the car seat. It can easily be adjusted to the correct position, just above your child’s shoulders, with one hand – even while they are sitting in the seat. Plus, the headrest is ergonomically designed to support your child’s head when they fall asleep.

As for the seating area, it was ergonomically optimized and is 12% larger than similar models.

Easy adjustable V-shaped backrest:

Designed to give optimum support to your growing child, the V-shaped backrest provides more space (8% larger than similar models) for their back and shoulders. It automatically adjusts to match the angle of the vehicle seat, providing a better fit and a comfortable position for your child.

Installation:

All about me

Comfortably padded and deeper so larger children can sit inside, the KIDFIX III is the solution that you have been waiting for when your little one is taller than average but you still want to keep them superbly safe. A superior side impact protection system leaves more space for other passengers in the back of the car as it can be adjustably extended for use on whichever side the car door is on. To make installation easier, the seat is fitted with ISOFIX to hold the seat in place and a 3-point seatbelt to keep your child safe, with indicators to guide the seat belt through correctly and further indicators on the ISOFIX attachment arms that confirm when they are correctly in place. The side wings are deep and softly padded for further comfort too.

The KIDFIX III M also features a SecureGuard lap protector with ensures optimal lap belt positioning and helps to reduce abdominal forces in the event of a frontal collision by up to 35%. The V-shaped backrest means that the seat can cope with a growing child. The ergonomically designed headrest is great for the ultimate sleeping position, and the padded cover is removable for easy machine washing at 30°c – very convenient.

So that’s ultimate safety all round with quality design, comfort and easy installation with ISOFIX, belt or both. What more could you want in a highback booster?
