Thailand’s youth rebellion and the monarchy BBC News

For the first time, a mass movement is openly calling for reform of the monarchy in Thailand, shattering a taboo surrounding the royal institution’s nearsacred status.

Influenced by last year’s protests in Hong Kong, young Thais have used social media and drawn on popular culture to outwit the efforts of the Thai police to shut their movement down. An unpopular government has so far been reluctant to use harsh measures against them.

The monarchy has lost much of the reverence it enjoyed under the long reign of King Bhumibol, who died four years ago. His less popular son, King Vajiralongkorn, has alarmed many Thais by accumulating even more power and living overseas. But he is now back in Thailand, meeting royalists and encouraging them to challenge the studentled protests with demonstrations of loyalty.

The stage is set for a dangerous confrontation between these two factions.

The BBC’s Jonathan Head spoke to people on each side.

Thailand launches mass Covid vaccination drive BBC News

As Thailand faces a third wave of coronavirus cases, the country has begun it’s vaccination programme aiming to give 6m doses this month.

Thailand previously said it hoped to vaccinate half its population by the middle of the 2021, but in March the rollout of the AstraZeneca’s Covid19 vaccine was delayed over reports of blood clots, despite there being no evidence of a link to the jab.

Thailand protests: More than 40 injured as clashes rock Bangkok BBC News

At least 41 people were left injured after clashes between protesters and police in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

Protesters were attempting to reach parliament on Tuesday, where lawmakers were debating possible changes to the constitution.

They hurled smoke bombs and bags of paint at police, who retaliated with water cannon and teargas solution.

The proposed constitutional changes have been one of the core demands of the monthslong protest movement.

Others included reforms to the monarchy and the removal of Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha a former general who seized power in a 2014 coup.

But the BBC’s Jonathan Head, who was at the scene, said many activists were worried that parliament would dismiss most of their demands in particular, the one calling for reform of the monarchy.

Thailand’s lèsemajesté law, which forbids any insult to the monarchy, is among the strictest in the world.

Over the past five months a studentled protest movement has started demanding reform of the monarchy and an end to military coups, of which Thailand has had twenty in modern times.

The demonstrations sent shockwaves through a country which is taught from birth to revere and love the monarchy and fear the consequences of talking about it.

Are these people really a threat to Thai national security? BBC News

With more than half the population registered as Facebook users, Thailand has one of the highest rates of social media use in the world.

The military junta that rules the country has, like other governments in the region, expressed concern about the spread of fake news online.

It’s adapted draconian laws against computer crimes to impose heavy penalties on those accused of uploading false or distorted information.

While the country may return to democracy with an election next year, Thai government critics now risk being accused of “fake news” – and having these laws turned against them.

The growing prodemocracy movement has been calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha the former army chief who seized power in a 2014 coup and was later appointed as premier after controversial elections last year.

Disillusioned by years of military rule, protesters are demanding amendments to the constitution, a new election and an end to the harassment of rights activists and state critics.

They are also calling for curbs on the king’s powers a demand that has led to unprecedented public discussion of an institution long shielded from criticism by law.

Hidden cameras capture Thai tigers BBC News

This year 79 tigers were captured on hidden cameras in Thailand’s ThungyaiHuai Kha Khaeng forest, which is an increase of more than 70% from 13 years ago. The forest accounts for half of the country’s tiger population.

According to the WWF, wild tiger numbers are starting to gradually increase globally. Tiger populations are stable or increasing in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia and China. An estimated 3,900 tigers remain in the wild, but in some areas, including much of Southeast Asia, tiger numbers are declining.

BBC Thai spoke to researcher Sompoch Duangchantrasiri about why it is important to keep the big cats in Thailand’s forests.

  1. Thai king is a spoiled idiot. it's a shame of country. he makes people become slaves to rob and kill. this is some of what he did which leads to teenage protest wanting to end this bloody monarchy and say no more kings…
    – robbed Taksin 76 billion baht, then tried to kill him
    – robbed Yingluck 35 billion baht
    – robbed Dhammakaya temple 13 billion baht
    – robbed Thai people at least 30 billion baht/year
    – killed whomever who say the truth about them
    – sleep with whomever he wanted, even celebrities, there's no respect towards marriage
    – make polices and soldiers become his slave to rob and kill people, whomever not obey? he'll torture them in his royal jail (no laws) or even kill.
    – don't let Thai people use any Covid vaccines, except the one that he made and the one that he got commission from CP company. it leads to more than 6,204 death and still counting on.
    – send the bad general to rob and kill Thai people. then lie to the world that he is our elected prime minister, which he's not! the first time he got it from robbing from a lady (Yingluck), the second time he got it from cheating!
    – and many more, the list is too long to write everything what he did to Thai people.

  2. I'm Thai, the government's terrible work, cheat everything. The government's huge budget is in favor of government politicians.
Another scary thing When you tell the truth about this country You will be severely punished.

Please help Thai people. Please. we are dying by the hand of the government

  3. all nations should ban all monarchies since they only brought Genocide to the world for all races, they only care about the enslavement of their nation and use others as pawns to do their biddings. USA though does not have monarchies, they have the Elites, a group of the richest families in the nation and abroad working together for their own agendas.

Also this shows that any nation that has Far Right ideals, is only going to destroy their nation from within, history repeats.

  4. 9:27 Do you know? In Thailand have elephant ticket. Elephant ticket from the monarchy. And This ticket can promote military and police to good position.

  6. thailand is still considered an ally of the usa. they pay. it is now the time joe biden to set democracy upon
the allies first. kingdom abolished in saudi arabia, emirates, all middle east so called traitor allies. and all usa domains. like thailand. the king has women while thousands of young men are forced, not by nature, to become women.
the usa has the resources to set democracy in their power range. not the time for russia, china, south korea.
iran has to become an ally, to destroy the monarchies in the middle east. full democracy has to be restored within the allies. the king of thailand, knife castrated and sent to be owned by poor men.

  7. Just remember democracy also messed up many countries, mainly seen in the neighbouring countries such as Burma and Cambodia, just because democracy grant freedom doesn’t mean people will all agree and that can lead to greater conflict that will probably be bloodshed, not saying monarchy is good, everything has their flaws and if a side doesn’t admit their flaws, they’ve already fail to begin with
