Salomon S-Lab Sense 7 Review

I was excited to try out my first pair of Salomon trail shoes. That excitement continued as I slipped them on. They are comfortable and just feel like a lightweight, fast shoe, built for cruising through single-tracks. But my joy waned the more I wore them and discovered that they lack the durability I need in a trail shoe.

The S-Lab Sense 7 provides good traction on most types of terrains and surfaces

Best for on dirt trails, on paved trails, on paved roads, sidewalks, etc…, through grassy sections or cross-country courses, along moderate trails

Introduction Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

The Salomon S-Lab Sense 7 is designed as a speedy, minimalist shoe. But it does come at a price — $180 — that may be off-putting to some, especially when the shoe’s durability comes into question.

Impressions Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

To be fair, the shoe is not designed to handle rugged, technical trails. If it is speed you want, the seventh version of this model will provide that and is an improvement over previous models. I found myself able to glide through single track and smooth trails with ease in the Salomon Sense 7 (7.6 ounces for a size 10 men’s). The 18mm/14mm drop works well for me. It struck me that the shoes actually have decent room in the toe box, even though they are shaped for speed. During my runs, I never felt my toes being cramped like I have experienced in other minimalist shoes. Salomon’s unique lacing style looks odd at first, but it works well to secure the foot in place comfortably. (The one downside is that after a muddy/wet run, the lace connection got jammed up so it took some manuevering to free it in order to get the shoe off.)

Protection Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

When it comes to protection, let’s start out in the front. The toe bumper is a bit of a misnomer. It is basically a thicker reinforced mesh that tries its hardest to protect the foot. On lesser technical trails, runners may be accepting of a random rock or two that they kick. But on more technical terrain, the lack of protection becomes more of an issue. In the back, the heel counter is low and keeps with the shoe’s minimalist approach. However, it does appear to be secure. The padding around the collar is once again minimal. Probably good enough up to moderate trails, but could be an issue on more challenging terrain.

Rockplate The S-Lab Sense 7 does not have a rock plate. Not present Solid protection

Water resistance … Read more protection from splashes and puddles The S-Lab Sense 7 provides a decent Poor Water Resistant

Durability Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

I saw the Salomon Sense 7’s begin to age as I wore them on more challenging trails. It will not perform well on rocks or trails packing a lot of obstacles in the runner’s way. That said, it is important to note that the lugs do provide some support through the mud. The lugs are widely spaced, which allows for a cushioned feel though, as noted, it does slow the runner down. This is an important distinction, especially for those who do a lot of training and/or racing in wet or muddy environments. The shoes would, I believe, perform well on cross-country courses even through wet grass or muddy spots.

Responsiveness & Speed Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

During my first run with the Salomons, I tested them on a fairly flat trail with minimal technical challenges. They performed superbly, allowing me to hit that extra gear when I wanted to. However, the more challenging the trail became, the less useful the shoe became. It was challenged by mud, more so than other shoes I would consider to be on the faster side. Same goes for snowy or sandy areas. For those who love the shoe, it’s important to understand on what surfaces it can be most beneficial to the runner.

Comfort and Fit Salomon S-Lab Sense 7

The shoe gets well-deserved kudos for its single-layer breathable mesh upper. Somehow Salomon has figured out a way to produce really thin, light, ventilated and quick-to-dry shoes. The fit is secure, partially because of the thin overlays that combine with the booty like SensiFit system. If I had these last summer, I definitely would have worn them for my half marathon trail race that was mostly on a cross-country course. However, I am looking at longer, more technical races this year, and don’t see the Salomons being an option.

Shoe Review: Salomon S/Lab Sense 7 SG

Shoe Review: Salomon S/Lab Sense 7 SG

As you might know, here at Run Coed y Brenin we like Salomon. That’s not to say that we don’t like other brands, far from it. With brands such as inov8, Hoka, On, Saucony, ASICS, Altra, Scott and others all producing top notch footwear, the 2018 trail runner has never had it so good!

However, having now sold over 2000 pairs of Salomon shoes in the 4+ years that we have been operating, we are definitely confident that their shoes are amongst the most comfortable, well-built and innovative on the market.

The S/Lab Sense shoe is a ground-breaker. Developed as far back as 2010 with prototypes worn at the super-harsh Western States 100 by Kilian Jornet and subsequent mountain events for that year, 2011 saw the incarnation of what has become an industry benchmark shoe.

(NOTE HERE: We realise that the S/Lab Sense isn’t for everybody, but for those that love the previous Sense shoes, please read on!)

Over the last 7 years the Sense has developed to be a low-drop, super-light favourite of trail runners across the globe and with the SG (Soft Ground) version the tools are there for any trail to be tackled from a dusty 100-miler to a short, sharp, gnarly, wet and muddy mountain trail.

The Sense has always come in a standard and soft ground (SG) version, with the main differences being the more aggressive grip on the soft ground – perfect for those (normally) pretty crappy UK trail conditions (especially in Coed y Brenin for 8 months of the year!)

So, when Matt Ward took out the all-new S/Lab Sense 7 SG from a trusty Salomon manila cardboard box a few weeks ago what was he expecting? Improvements? Sure. Innovation? Definitely. Comfort? Yes. Top notch build quality? Of course. Superb slipper-like fit? Why not! The good news? These criteria have been met and exceeded in what Matt feels is possibly the best shoe that Salomon have ever produced.

Firstly, don’t get me wrong. The Sense 7 is not for everyone. With a 4mm drop, a new narrowed heel cup, minimal forefoot protection and super-lightweight uppers, some might feel that there just isn’t enough to the Sense 7 SG to make them feel confident. For that runner who needs some extra stability, cushioning and support then the Sense might not be for them. But, for a shoe that helps grow the confidence of a trail runner in terms of precision fit, accuracy on foot plant and enables mid to forefoot strike, then this is the real deal.

In terms of grip the Contagrip stays, the sole lug-pattern stays, however it’s possible that with the narrower heel profile (see below) the precision is even better. That might seem a little odd to those that like a big hearty heel base when they plant, but if you think about it, with a mid to forefoot strike on say 80% of your run, you just don’t need that extra volume at the back.

You still get the Profile Film ‘rock plate’ too, which does give that little bit of extra protection when the rocks get pointy.

The uppers and tongue area are where we perhaps see some of the biggest changes on the Sense 7. When I first saw the toe box of the new Sense I have to admit I was sceptical. The toe area protection rand is now situated underneath the uppers, which looks sleek as hell, but leaves you wondering where the protection is for the toe-kicks on rock n roots. Fear not, the protection is there, with more supple rubber and on the 50 or so miles I have covered in these to date, on some pretty gnarly terrain, there has been no issue on this aspect.

The closed-mesh upper of the Sense 6 is also replaced with a more open-mesh textile for the 7. On first look this might make for a shoe that would leave the runner with colder feet in the harshest UK winter conditions, and that remains to be seen, but in terms of debris ingress into the shoe I can’t see there being any problem with this new upper textile.

Next up? Tongue and lacing. All new once again. The 7 gets the top-loader Quick Lace treatment, as used on the Ultra and Ultra Pro, and is all the better for it! This now means a lot less fiddling the get the lock and excess lace into the ‘garage’ (pocket to us in the UK). It also means that there is less tension across the instep of the foot and the whole freedom aspect around flexibility of the shoe just feels, well, better!

The new lightweight, less absorbent (in terms of water), more tactile tongue is simply beautiful and that material extends across the whole of the heel cup uppers too. Spot on.

Also new is the insole, or should I say lack of it. Look inside the new Sense 7 and you’ll see a very minimal insole, that is also permanently stitched into shoe. This has two advantages in my view. 1. It won’t come out (pretty obvious huh!) but that also means no loose insole rucking up and flapping about when the shoe gets wet and you are hurtling on a descent of your favourite hill, and 2, it also means that people like me can fit their trusty minimal footbeds in to the shoe (just about) to ensure a perfect fit and foothold when the shoe is on.

In terms of fit, wow! The 7 SG fits light an absolute glove. Once you have got used to the fact it is like a climbing shoe to get on when you first take them out of the box, you’ll be fine. After two or three runs they will feel like part of your feet, seriously.

When I first wore a pair of Sense shoes in 2011 I genuinely thought that they would be too minimal for me. For about 6 months my calves were agreeing with that thought as I had to get my body used to the fact that a 4mm drop and a natural running feel shoe was pretty radical. Once I got there, I never looked back and for me now 4mm is an absolute ‘sweet spot’ in terms of drop and the forefoot strike promoting Sense is an absolute dream.

After six versions I always thought that they just couldn’t improve on that last one, surely! But you know what, with the Sense 7 and Sense 7 SG I think they have.

Running shoe review: Salomon S/Lab Sense 7 tried and tested

Salomon are the Rolls Royce of mountain running: prestigious, meticulous and committed to quality. They also both happen to be rather expensive: these shoes are retailing at a wallet-lightening £160.

Part of the excitement around Salomon’s S/Lab Sense 7 concerns their most famous wearer: Kilian Jornet. The Catalan mountain runner, widely regarded to be the world’s best, has been closely involved in the designing of the shoes. And if they’re good enough for Kilian…

Although you don’t have to be setting course records on Mont Blanc to enjoy these shoes, everything about them screams high performance.

They weigh in at 199g (the majority of trail shoes weigh in excess of 250g). They have a 4mm heel-to-toe drop, making them more suited to midfoot or forefoot strikers. And they have a stack height of 18mm in the heel and 14mm in the forefoot. On the plus side, this means you’ll get good “ground feel” and, arguably, be steadier on your feet. On the down side, if you’re a larger runner, you may find them lacking in the “underfoot protection” department.

The lugs on the S/Lab Sense 7 are fairly understated, certainly compared to something like the inov-8 X-Talon, but they provide an impressive amount of grip nonetheless. On several mud-caked outings, they held up will on grass, gravel, sand and stone. The shoes’ less aggressive tread also means they adapt seamlessly to road sections.

For the laces, Salomon stick with the Quicklace system. Quicklaces tends to create a Marmite-like division between runners: some love its simplicity; others long for traditional laces. In this particular instance, the Quicklace system is largely a success, although we did experience a slight loosening of the laces towards the end of a tough session.

The fit is another area that will delight some runners and discourage others. Simply put, the shoe hugs the foot. If, like our tester, you have a fairly narrow foot, you’ll welcome this development. For the broader-footed runner, however, it may prove something of a deal-breaker.

Similarly, the shoes fits about a half size smaller than most other brands: I usually wear a 9; in these I’m a 9.5. On the plus side, I’ve so far experienced absolutely no hot spots while wearing the shoes.

On the flexibility front, the S/Lab Sense 7 strikes a nice middle ground. It’s firm enough to feel responsive, but pliable enough to let your foot move naturally over changing terrain. And – not that this should be top priority in a pair of shoes that will spend most of their time covered in mud – they look great too. Their confident red-and-white colouring makes you feel fast while wearing them.

There’s no getting away from the fact that £160 RRP is a lot to pay for a pair of shoes. And if you’re more of a mid-packer than a frontrunner, or prefer wider shoes with a cushioned feel, then you’re better off looking elsewhere. But for those looking to figure at the sharp end of races, Kilian’s kicks are about as good as it gets.
