INTRODUCTION
Three years ago, the Pegasus 36 Trail dropped out of nowhere. It was a rugged, off-road version of the standard Pegasus 36.
The Peg 36 Trail wasn’t a ‘true’ trail running shoe, though.
It was similar to what Asics did with its GT-2000 ‘trail’ variants. Which was, take the existing road shoe design and add an outdoors color scheme with a slightly modified outsole.
Just like the road Pegasus 36, the Trail edition used a split outsole design and deep groove. Even the upper was light on the protective detail.
The Pegasus Trail 2 was different. It lost the Zoom Air bag as well as the articulated outsole geometry. In their place were a softer React foam midsole and a single-piece outsole without a transition groove.
The upper was also reinforced to make it trail-worthy; the outsole wrapped over the toe-box to create a protective bumper. The forefoot also had high-density printing to prevent mesh tear. In the rear, a soft gaiter helped keep the debris out.
The Pegasus Trail 3 is built on the same foam and rubber chassis as the V2, so the ride hasn’t changed.
It’s a comfortable off-road running shoe that works best on non-technical trails; the outsole traction is decent for its lug geometry.
You know where we’re leading with this – the Pegasus Trail 3 isn’t a hardcore running shoe designed for technical terrain.
Its toned-down trail shoe character makes it an excellent trail-road hybrid with a high level of ride comfort.
It works best on flat sections or gentle gradients where the React midsole and rubber outsole can be utilized to their full potential. The soft midsole also lacks a rock plate.
It’s easy to see that the Pegasus Trail 3 prioritizes ride comfort over technical trail capabilities.
By being what it is, the Pegasus Trail 3 also adds a lot of value to Nike’s trail running shoe assortment.
For a higher level of ride comfort and protection, there’s the Zoom Wildhorse 7 with its thicker midsole and rock plate. For a firmer, yet protective and proprioception-friendly ride, the Nike Terra 7 is the shoe to get.
All three trail shoes are priced similarly, so it’s simply a matter of appropriate use case.
For this review, we chose the Pegasus Trail 3 Gore-Tex that’s $30 more expensive than the standard model.
Besides the waterproofing, the GTX variant also gets the soft gaiter attached to the heel collar. On the flip side, there’s no gaiter attachment point on the forefoot.
It’s interesting to note that while the Pegasus Trail 2 had a gaiter in both the standard and GTX versions, here, only the GTX model has it – so it makes sense to buy this over the other despite the price premium.
Just so that you know, we’re reviewing the women’s Pegasus Trail 3, which is the same as the men’s model – except for the narrow ‘B’ width.
THE RIDE EXPERIENCE
The Pegasus Trail 3’s ride character is very easy to read.
That’s not surprising given its simple build – the midsole is made just of Nike React foam without an internal cushioning system or rock plate.
The said midsole is protected by a full-length rubber outsole with shallow lugs.
The rubber compound is Nike’s RS 001 that offers satisfactory traction over most surfaces – unless we’re talking about ice or wet rocks where most outsoles struggle to grip.
Ortholite insoles had been missing on Nike running shoes for a while, so we’re happy to see them return.
Inside the Pegasus Trail 3 is a removable footbed with a blown foam base; this soft layer blends perfectly with the comfortable React midsole.
The Pegasus Trail 3’s midsole is made entirely of Nike React foam, so its ride quality depends on how warm or cold the temperatures are. Yes, that’s a thing that very few reviews call out. React foam is soft on hot days, and hardens in below-freezing temps.
In our review of the first Nike running shoe with React foam, we called out this material’s tendency to stiffen during the cold. Likewise, this midsole hardens considerably in temperatures below freezing.
Our testing was conducted during winters with a wide temperature range consisting of mild (above 0° C/32° F) and below-freezing days. During the coldest day (-7° C/ -19° F), the Pegasus Trail 3 turned into a much stiffer shoe.
Looking back, the name ‘React’ was oddly prescient, as it ‘reacted’ to changing temperatures. Other new-age foams like Nike ZoomX and adidas Boost are unaffected by temperatures.
Therefore, many runners will form a different opinion about the Pegasus Trail 3 based on where – and when – they run.
At temperatures (above 5° C/41° F) and warmer, the React midsole has a soft and compliant ride with a high level of comfort. Conversely, a stiffer midsole has a lower level of ride comfort but becomes more stable.
The firmer ride during winter runs is actually a good thing. And no, this is not sarcasm.
Not only does the stiffer midsole become more protective and stable over the trail, but its transition quality also becomes better. Runners will find the Pegasus Trail 3 more amenable to speed runs during the winters than warmer weather.
During warmer days, the Pegasus Trail 3 is an excellent cruising shoe.
Its cushy React midsole and mild outsole lug are perfect for flat trails and gentle gradients; it’s only on these surfaces where the ride comfort comes into its own.
The foam midsole has a nice bounce to it. Unlike the Pegasus 36 Trail, there’s no Zoom Air bag inside. That said, the React foam has a pleasing pep in its cushioning that makes long-distance runs comfortable.
It’s not just about the foam density. The sidewalls have a generous inwards scoop that helps with the cushioning process, and is supported by a wide outsole base.
Readers will notice that the midsole has a balanced sidewall design with no bias – both the inner and outer sides are nearly identical. Like its road version, the Pegasus Trail 3 has a very neutral ride character.
The shallow lugs have a flat texture, so the occasional road-hopping won’t wear them down as quickly as a trail outsole with pointy lugs. The rear outsole has a fair bit of (outwards) lip, and that provided much-needed contact area during downhill runs.
The lack of a rock shield and aggressive lug design limits the Pegasus Trail 3’s versatility. On warmer days, the soft midsole and perforated outsole do not offer the protection that plate-equipped shoes do.
The Pegasus Trail 3 can be used on most gentle trails; just don’t expect the performance capabilities of a fully-kitted trail running shoe.
Else, it’s a very comfortable road-trail hybrid with a generous amount of ride and fit comfort.
THE UPPER DESIGN AND FIT
As the Pegasus Trail 3 carries over the midsole and outsole from the Trail 2, it inherits a similar toe-box aesthetic.
The protective toe-bumper is a clever design that uses the outsole as an extension of the upper. While we’re sure this is a nightmare (look at all the glue marks) from a manufacturing perspective, the functional rubber bumper is also a unique visual marker.
This also gives the toe-box a broad profile with plenty of toe splay room. The forefoot is snug over the small toe, and while the last has the final word in the matters of upper fit, the lacing design also plays a significant role.
The first row of lacing also threads through a loop over the forefoot before connecting to the eyelets. This helps secure the forefoot and also prevents the mesh from gathering.
Though the tongue keeps the foam padding to a minimum, there’s a thick molded pad on the flap that absorbs the lacing pressure.
We’d like to point out that the Pegasus Trail 3’s tongue design replaces the interlocked flap of the V2. The flap is softer, but shorter than the Pegasus Trail 2 – so things get crowded when the last row of lacing is used.
If you want a slightly relaxed fit, just skip lacing through the forefoot loop. We say this because the Pegasus Trail 3 only sells in a single width – which is ‘B’ for women’s, and a ‘D’ for men’s.
Both the GTX and non-waterproof variants use a soft mesh. Even the Gore-Tex upper is surprisingly soft and pliable and doesn’t create a paucity of space. Both the models fit true-to-size.
Just like the midsole and outsole, the upper isn’t overly structured. Except for the protective toe-bumper and reinforced lacing eyestay, the mesh upper is left relatively uncovered. The large Swoosh logo on the outer is fused Urethane, but the arch side is all mesh.
It’s easy to slip into the shoe. Though the tongue is attached to the upper, it also has a working flap for ease of entry.
The heel has a few things going on, like the large pull tab and molded overlays. Since there’s a full-sized stiff counter inside the heel, the molded layers are cosmetic.
There’s no reflectivity on the Pegasus Trail 3 – not even a high-visibility heel strap like what the Brooks Cascadia 16 has. We guess Nike wants everyone to buy the Pegasus 38 Shield instead – which, by the way, isn’t a trail shoe.
The heel fits better on the waterproof model, and should we say, feels better. That’s because it uses a gaiter, whereas the non-waterproof Pegasus Trail 3 does not. There are foam pods inside the collar that do their job and create a secure heel grip.
Just know that the gaiter is not lined with Gore-Tex, so it’s designed to keep just the debris out – not water.
Otherwise, the rest of the upper has reliable waterproofing. Running in the rains will delay the entry of water when compared to non-waterproof shoes, and the occasional splash from crossing a shallow stream won’t ruin your run.
Except for the toe area, the upper is not all that protective – the medial side is all mesh, whereas the Urethane swoosh provides some protection. The stiff heel counter is supported with a fused layer and ripstop mesh. The large and functional pull loop is a useful feature to have.
As we said, the Pegasus Trail 3 is a shoe meant for mild trail run – nothing more.
PROS AND CONS
The Pegasus Trail 3 is what we call an ‘easy reach’ shoe. The outsole geometry is mild enough for road runs as well as outdoor terrains that doesn’t involve high-difficulty gradients.
There’s ample React inside the midsole to make it comfortable enough for long miles on non-technical trails. The upper has a smooth and secure fit, and the soft gaiter on the Gore-Tex version is useful. The water-proofing on the GTX version is effective at keeping the water out.
We also like the unique toe-bumper on the upper, as well as the broad toe-box profile.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the Pegasus Trail 3 is not your versatile, do-everything trail shoe. It lacks a rock plate as well as deep outsole lugs; its cushy ride isn’t very protective either. And if you wanted to attach a gaiter, the loop or D-ring is missing on the forefoot.
So while this shoe has a ‘trail’ suffix, it has limited versatility. Given its mild nature, we’d keep the Pegasus away from technical trails.
Nike’s React foam hardens in the cold, so its cushioning delivery is inconsistent across seasons.
SHOES SIMILAR TO THE NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL 3
Here, we’re comparing the Pegasus Trail 3 with outdoor shoes with a lower technical level than the Saucony Peregrine 11, Brooks Cascadia 16 (our review is here) and even Nike’s Terra Kiger 7.
Comparable products would be trail shoes with low-profile lugs and a comfortable midsole and upper.
When we apply that selection criterion, we are presented with choices like the Asics Cumulus 23 AWL and New Balance Fresh Foam Hierro 6 – along with many others.
Out of all the alternatives, the Asics Cumulus AWL, Fuji Lite 2, and Hierro are the closest match.
The Cumulus AWL (All Winter Long) is a weather-resistant variant of the road Cumulus; the upper is water-repellent and protective. There are extras like the toggle lacing and protective toe-bumper over a ripstop mesh upper.
The Asics Fuji Lite 2 isn’t weatherproof, but it shares similar functional traits with the Pegasus Trail 3 – like the comfortable Flytefoam midsole, mildly protective upper, and the Asicsgrip outsole.
Other alternatives would be trail running shoes like the Altra Timp 3, Brooks Catamount, and Salomon Ultraglide. All these models share common traits like a cushioned and compliant midsole without a rock plate, along with comfortable uppers without excessive layering protection.

UPPER NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL 3 GORE-TEX: protección más eficiente
El upper de este nuevo modelo se ha reinventado para ofrecer una protección frente al agua mucho más eficiente.
El efecto trenzado del modelo anterior se ha modificado por un upper en forma de red en casi la totalidad de la zapatilla en lugar de tan solo la parte delantera.
Este material resistente impedirá que tanto el agua de la lluvia como el barro se introduzcan a lo largo de su uso, y podamos realizarlo con mayor comodidad.
Es, además, resistente a los elementos cortantes como las piedras, las ramas y las zarzas, lo que incrementará la durabilidad de nuestras compañeras de viaje.
En la zona delantera nos encontramos con los rombos, ya vistos en modelos anteriores, que en este caso incrementan de tamaño y al contrario que el modelo con membrana de 2020, están protegidos mediante una zona termosellada.
Esto, junto con la placa delantera, hará que nuestros dedos estén completamente protegidos ante cualquier amenaza de piedras sueltas. El conjunto de estos cambios permitirá que la zapatilla mantenga la forma con el paso de los kilómetros, impidiendo la pérdida de firmeza del material.
OJALES SEPARADOS EN DOS PIEZAS
Este modelo elimina el sistema Flyware, visto en modelos anteriores, como las Pegasus 38, por un conjunto de piezas termoselladas al upper.
Este sistema ya se vio en las Pegasus Trail 2 GORE-TEX, pero en este modelo se ha reforzado utilizando material más resistente que aporta una mayor fiabilidad en cada zancada.
En la fijación se pueden distinguir dos partes:

TALÓN Y COLLAR REFORZADOS
El talón se ha reforzado incluyendo a ambas partes de la zona baja una zona termosellada que abraza y protege de una manera más efectiva.
La tela del collar de la zona superior ha sufrido un cambio radical, pasando de un material de tipo neopreno a uno más fuerte y más agradable al tacto.
Éste abraza más la zona del tobillo, evitando así la entrada de rocas y agua en el momento del uso. Llega hasta una zona mucho más cercana del upper delantero, situándose en el final de la pieza de los ojales.
LENGÜETA DE LAS NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL 3 GORE-TEX
La lengüeta también ha sufrido cambios respecto a modelos anteriores. En las Pegasus trail 2 GORE-TEX nos encontrábamos con una lengüeta del mismo material que el del collar, de formato neopreno y muy fina. Esto hacía que no hubiese una gran protección del empeine, pudiendo notar molestias de los cordones con el paso de los kilómetros.
En las Pegasus Trail 3 GORE-TEX, por el contrario, encontramos un material más acolchado que nos da más protección a la zona del empeine.
Además, presenta una almohadilla en la zona central, con el nombre del modelo, que aporta mayor comodidad al atarnos los cordones y evita las mencionadas molestias.
Suela NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL 3 GORE-TEX: tracción y agarre
Nike La suela sigue la línea de sus predecesoras, proporcionando un agarre más que suficiente para todo tipo de terrenos y senderos no muy embarrados. Presenta un patrón de taqueado homogéneo de 4mm. con forma, anchura y orientación diferente a lo largo de la zapatilla.
Este cambio de orientación de los tacos traseros frente a los delanteros hace que no tengamos problemas de tracción en las subidas o bajadas técnicas y algo embarradas.
Al presentar este taqueado no muy prominente, la pisada en asfalto no es agresiva, protegiéndolos y haciendo la transición entre el asfalto y la montaña mucho más amena.
DETALLES A DESTACAR DE LAS NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL 3 GORE-TEX

CONCLUSIONES
Esta zapatilla se ha convertido en una de mis tres modelos imprescindibles, junto con las Pegasus 38 y las Nike Zoom Fly 3, debido a la gran versatilidad y polivalencia que me ofrecen.
Normalmente suelo entrenar en un monte que se sitúa a unos 2 kilómetros de donde inicio la ruta, es por ello que este tipo de zapatilla con un taqueado suave me permite ir muy cómodo por el asfalto durante esos kilómetros iniciales.
La presencia de la ligera y duradera espuma React y la cantidad que presenta, proporciona una gran amortiguación, reactividad y evita, como en otros casos, la presencia de una placa antiroca o una mayor protección en la suela que incrementaría el peso de la zapatilla.
Como conclusión de esta zapatilla, destacaría:

La nueva lengüeta evita completamente la molestia que te podía ocasionar el nudo del cordón y los ojales en cambio, nos proporcionan una sujeción mucho más natural y dinámica, que nos permite ajustarla a nuestro parecer.
Es una zapatilla perfecta para el monte, tanto para expertos como para personas que se quieran iniciar en el mundo del trailrunning o el senderismo.
Gracias a la membrana impermeable GORE-TEX ahora lo podemos hacer en cualquier momento del año incluso en las condiciones más adversas, sin preocuparnos de empapar, ensuciar o deteriorar la zapatilla.

Las Nike Pegasus ya llevan 38 ediciones, son un clásico entre las zapatillas para correr y entrenar por asfalto. Sin embargo, las Pegasus Trail tienen solo 3 versiones, y con ellas, la intención de Nike es llevar ese espíritu rodador y cómodo a los corredores que van más allá del asfalto, que quieran meterse por caminos, senderos y montaña (sin pasarse de técnico). ✅ Las puedes comprar en la web de Nike España.
Sin embargo, pese a que las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 llegan en este 2021 junto a las Nike Pegasus 38, lo cierto es que comparten bastante poco más allá del nombre. En las Pegasus Trail 3 tenemos un mejor upper, más ventilado, suave y fino (ojalá fuese el mismo en las Pegasus 38), más altura y amortiguación sin afectar a la estabilidad, una base muy amplia, mucho espacio interior, un ajuste más seguro y, por supuesto, una suela más agresiva para resistir terrenos más rotos, aunque está lejos de ser perfecta.
Nike Pegasus Trail 3: opinión
¿Conoces las bicicletas gravel? Son híbridos entre bicicletas de carretera y MTB, con geometrías más cercanas a las primeras, pero con perfiles más anchos para poder improvisar y meternos tanto por carreteras de asfaltos, como por caminos, atajos, senderos e incluso alguna zona más técnica dependiendo del nivel de cada uno.
Bien, pues mi percepción de las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 es como la de esas bicicletas gravel: una zapatillas todoterreno, muy muy cómodas, que se alejan de los puros modelos de trail porque puedes correr con ellas perfectamente por asfalto y ciudad, pero si decides salirte del camino y entrar en tierra, senderos, piedras, grava o cualquier otra cosa que no sea asfalto, funcionarán igual de bien, e irás más seguro y confiado que con unas zapatillas de carretera.
Las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 son un híbrido. No son las zapatillas de trail definitivas, y aquellos puristas de la montaña, acostumbrados a terrenos técnicos, húmedos, barrizales y otras zonas complicadas, no deberían tenerlas en cuenta. El enfoque aquí es otro, es llevar una zapatilla de asfalto al off-road, y así se percibe al correr con ellas.
Claves de Nike Pegasus Trail 3: puntos fuertes y débilidades
Estas son las claves de las Nike Pegasus Trail 3:
Extra de comodidad : no es habitual que la amortiguación y la sensación de “mulliditas” destaque en Trail, pero aquí sí. Es una zapatilla que convence por lo cómodísimas que resultan. Toda la media suela es espuma React, igual que en las Pegasus 38, pero lo cierto es que, en mi opinión, aquí es mucho más blanda y amortiguada. Al menos mi sensación es que en las Pegasus de carretera el tacto es más firme. Por cierto, en las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 no hay ninguna cápsula de aire AirZoom en el interior de la media suela, como sí ocurre con las Pegasus clásicas de carretera.

Upper suave, ventilado y reforzado : muy diferente al de las Pegasus 38, y mejor en cuanto a ventilación, en mi opinión. Todo la parte delantera y lateral upper de las Pegasus Trail 3 es doble malla fina, pero aquí tiene muchas más microperforaciones haciéndolo más ventilado. Se agradece para mantener los pies frescos y, en caso de humedad, secar antes. De mitad de zapatilla hacia el talón, el upper se hace más rígido, tiene varios contrafuertes plásticos para aportar estabilidad y todo el apoyo del talón y el ajuste del collar del tobillo queda muy bien sujeto. Esto, junto a la lengüeta mullida (cosida interiormente para que no se tuerza), hacen la zapatilla muy cómoda y con un gran ajuste para evitar torceduras si el terreno es inestable.

Otro punto positivo son los refuerzos del upper . En la puntera, la pieza de la suela externa se eleva ligeramente para proteger la parte frontal/baja de los dedos. No es una gran protección, pero sí hace su función ante tropiezos con piedras elevadas o ramas de árboles. Si el impacto es más alto, o más lateral, no hay protección. Los refuerzos también están presentes en los ojales de los cordones, toda esa zona está realmente bien acabada.
. En la puntera, la pieza de la suela externa se eleva ligeramente para proteger la parte frontal/baja de los dedos. No es una gran protección, pero sí hace su función ante tropiezos con piedras elevadas o ramas de árboles. Si el impacto es más alto, o más lateral, no hay protección.
Como punto negativo: los cordones me han parecido cortos. Son justos para asegurar bien la zapatilla, pero a poco que quieras abrir más la lazada, o aprovechar los dos últimos agujeros, se quedan cortos. Pasa lo mismo en las Nike Invincible, y no entiendo cómo puede ocurrir.
Estabilidad, peso y drop de Nike Pegasus Trail 3
Hay mucho espacio interior en la parte delantera. Nike tiende a tener modelos estrechos por norma general, pero en las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 mejora mucho ese aspecto. Mientras que la zona del talón queda bien sujeta, la parte delantera deja más espacio al pie, no queda tan prieto.
Estas Pegasus Trail 3, en mi talla 10 USA (44 europeo) tienen un peso de 324 gramos. Es un peso considerable, pero dadas las protecciones, y que hablamos de una zapatilla de trail / todoterreno, es aceptable. Mirándolo con perspectiva, son solo 20 gramos más que las Pegasus 38 de carretera.
El drop se mantiene en 10mm, de 36mm en la zona trasera a 26mm en el medio pie. Pese al aumento de grosor de la media suela, manteniendo el drop y ampliando la base de apoyo (es muy ancha delante), no se siente una zapatilla alta ni hay percepción de inestabilidad con ella.
Y queda el que seguramente es el elemento que más debería mejorar en las próximas iteraciones de las Pegasus Trail: la suela.
Sin duda es el elemento diferenciador, tenemos una suela de caucho muy densa, con grandes tacos para mejorar la tracción. Y lo cierto es que funciona, pero siempre que no salgamos de terreno seco.
Es una suela que permite correr muy bien por asfalto, no es un taqueado que moleste cuando corremos por ciudad (por ejemplo, si tenemos un tramo de carretera hasta llegar a los caminos), y aporta un buen agarre y durabilidad en caminos de tierra, piedras y demás. Sin embargo, si vives en una zona húmeda, con lluvias frecuentes y planeas moverte por zonas técnicas, rocas mojadas, musgo, vegetación húmeda… las Pegasus Trail 3 no son para tí. En mojado, sea cual sea el terreno, es una goma muy, muy resbaladiza.
Review Nike Pegasus Trail 3: conclusiones
Como decía al inicio, las Nike Pegasus Trail 3 son como una bicicleta de gravel, un modelo todo terreno, que prima la comodidad y la amortiguación, llevando las sensaciones y la velocidad de la carretera, a los caminos y senderos aportando un extra de protección.
Si quieres una zapatilla para trail técnico, agarre extremo incluso en las situaciones complicadas, en todo tipo de meteorología y terreno, estas no son las tuyas. Si tus salidas de trail son esporádicos, o el terreno por el que te mueves es seco y no especialmente complicado, y quieres la versatilidad de poder sacarlas al asfalto, por la ciudad o por donde se presente el día, entonces sí son una opción a valorar.

Por último, aunque no es algo que afecte en ningún sentido al rendimiento, no puedo dejar de mencionar en este análisis el espectacular diseño, no solo de las Pegasus Trail, sino de toda la gama trail de Nike (el trío junto a las Wildhorse y las Terra Kiger). Sin duda, son las zapatillas más bonitas, en diseño y combinación de colores, de todo el catálogo de Nike.

You have to give it up for a running shoe like the Nike Pegasus, which will unveil its 40th version this year. While there are several other longstanding models on the market with an outstanding reputation, most don’t have even close to half that many years of research and development involved to keep the model relevant in a rapidly changing industry over the past five years.
The Nike Pegasus Trail, now in its third iteration, had fairly inauspicious beginnings among the hardcore trail crowd. With Nike’s other models being the Kiger for light and fast duty, and the Wildhorse for long and burly runs, the Pegasus sometimes felt like a more heavily lugged road shoe that would only be warranted for mellow road-to-trail runs.
However, in the Pegasus Trail 2, Nike utilized soft and highly resilient React foam, which dramatically changed the ride of the Pegasus Trail and completely differentiated it from its road shoe heritage. With the Nike Pegasus Trail 3 ($130), the brand builds on a successful blending of cushioning, ample traction, and great durability to create an excellent all-around trail shoe that can handle ultramarathon distances. The shoe’s actual weight is 11 ounces (314 grams) for a men’s size 9, and 9.3 ounces (263 grams) for a women’s size 7.5.

Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Upper
The simple monochromatic color of the Nike Pegasus Trail 3 belies what is actually a pretty nuanced upper construction. A well-padded and gusseted tongue wraps around the midfoot, providing a surprising amount of lockdown.
The lacing eyelets are heavily reinforced with a durable rubber that feels bombproof; this all flows into a generous toebox, both in width and depth, which is comprised of tough dual-density mesh, and toecap and rand reinforcements in high-wear areas.
The heel feels moderately structured with a heel collar that is thin but plush, and it really hugs the heel on steep uphills. The heel also features a handy pull loop, and for whatever reason, this one seems functional to me.
Overall, the Pegasus Trail 3 upper is aesthetically pleasing with a classic running shoe look and terrific durability. The upper on my test pair looks basically brand new after around 100 miles on mostly dry and dusty trails.
Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Midsole
Did I mention that I’m a fan of Nike’s React midsole foam? I first experienced the magical qualities while running in high-mileage road shoes, like the Nike Infinity Run. What I’ve noticed about this midsole, is that in traditional stack heights of less than 30 millimeters or so, the midsole is unremarkable.
But when you pump up that volume to around 36mm, which is the stack height of the Nike Pegasus Trail 3, the ride turns really plush and protective. It also seems counterintuitive to run in a trail shoe with that high of a stack height and a heel-to-toe drop of 10mm. However, I didn’t have any issues running on semi-technical terrain in this shoe.
While I wouldn’t wear the Pegasus Trail 3 on a highly technical and rocky course, it worked great for the mild to moderate terrain I find myself on most days. I didn’t have any issues with off-camber terrain or ankle rolls, and the aforementioned midfoot lockdown kept me secure on downhills.
One area I could criticize in the Pegasus Trail 3 is the weight. With this shoe’s road genetics, you would think it would be a bit lighter than 10.9 ounces for a men’s size nine. For comparison, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 weighs about the same, while the Salomon Ultra Glide, which has about the same amount of underfoot protection, weighs a full ounce less.
I’ve come to learn that the ride of a shoe on the trail is much more important to me than the weight, especially for ultra distances. While I understand the physics and energy savings of featherweight shoes, I’d much rather have useable feet, which is usually the limiting factor for me in ultras.
Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Outsole
The outsole of the Nike Pegasus Trail 3 is simple but effective. It has about three millimeters of sticky and durable rubber, which grabs the trail well in dry conditions, and the multidirectional nature of the lugs seems to provide adequate grip both ascending and descending.
With the stack height of the Pegasus Trail 3 and the durability of React foam, I don’t feel it’s necessary for this shoe to have a rock plate. It would add weight and likely ruin ground feel.
Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Overall Impressions
The Nike Pegasus Trail 3 is a simple and surprisingly enjoyable trail shoe that has become a regular part of my rotation. It is fairly agile for being a highly cushioned shoe. Outside of highly technical or muddy terrain, the Pegasus Trail 3 is a durable all-day trail shoe that I would definitely lace up for the start of an ultra.
Additionally, if you’re a runner who frequently runs on the road to get to the trail and need a hybrid shoe, then the Pegasus Trail 3 is one of the best I’ve tested. Combined with a fairly modest price tag by today’s standards, this is a trail shoe that will work great for most runners.

Nike Pegasus Trail 3 Review
The Nike Trail Pegasus 3 is a versatile shoe that both a beginner and experienced trail runner can appreciate. It works great both on and off road with a comfortable ride that can go the distance. It being well rounded is unfortunately a downfall in the traction department, but it is otherwise a perfect shoe from Nike.

Impressions Nike Pegasus Trail 3
I was in love with the shoe right out of the box. I loved the way it looked and felt in my hands. It fit perfectly on the first go around and felt very smooth.. React foam is plush and stable and this works great both on road and on trail. I was a fan of the Trail Pegasus 2’s and how it set itself apart from the road version of the Pegasus. I liked the improvement to the upper and how it gave me a better locked down fit. While the upper was completely redone, the sole did not appear to be changed at all. I knew these would work great on packed down dirt and gravel but it would not be able to zone out on trails that had any sort of debris on them. Anything with roots, rocks, or stream crossing had me staring at the ground and making sure I could stay in control. If it was remotely wet I was second guessing wearing these. Thankfully the midsole is quite thick. While I had to be hyper aware to stay in control, it at least stayed comfortable when I was going over rocky terrain.

Durability Nike Pegasus Trail 3
This shoe worked great on packed dirt trails with minimal roots and rocks. It was durable enough for me to take it on longer distances without sacrificing comfort. After 50 miles there was barely signs of wear. Unfortunately, the state park I run trails on is far from “ideal” conditions: roots and rocks galore in a river valley. This translates into lots of muddy sections and stream crossings. I really had to make a conscious effort when I was running through wet conditions. The outsole traction is just not great on anything that is remotely muddy or wet. Thankfully the upper breathes great and dried quickly when it did get wet.
Responsiveness & Speed Nike Pegasus Trail 3
I wouldn’t say this is the fastest shoe I’ve ever ran in, but the react midsole compound makes it feel faster than it feels in your hands. On a good day, the shoe absorbed impact eloquently and allowed me to lift off with ease. Flat grade was best, but it still allowed me to take on hills as long as it was a dry day. I found my cadence shot way up out of fear of slipping after any inclement weather. Would I wear this on a fast course? Definitely; best believe I will be checking the weather before I do though.
Comfort and Fit Nike Pegasus Trail 3
This is probably one of the most comfortable running shoes I have owned; road or trail. The upper gives a ‘just right’ fit. It is a tad bottom heavy, but it’s not noticeable while running. The gusseted tongue and lacing system allowed for no hot spots or discomfort. The heel locked down great, and there is a decent amount of space in the toe box.

Nike Pegasus 38: análisis y opinión. ¿Qué ha cambiado?
Vamos con el análisis de las Nike Pegasus 38 tras casi 2 meses de uso. Mi opinión, review y cambios de las Pegasus 38 respecto al modelo anterior. ¿Qué hay de nuevo en una de las mayores zapatillas de Nike en cuanto a ventas?
“Las Pegasus”, basta decir eso para que cualquier corredor identifique al instante uno de los modelos más icónicos de Nike. Año tras año, siguen siendo una de las zapatillas de entrenamiento de referencia, sobre todo si tenemos en cuenta que, a pocas semanas de presentarse, ya se pueden encontrar rebajadas y a precios de lo más atractivos, por 80-90€, o menos.
El año pasado, con las Pegasus 37, Nike metió muchos cambios en este modelo respecto a las Pegasus 36, sin embargo las Nike Pegasus 38 son un modelo conservador y en este 2021 se centran en refinar algunos detalles principalmente del upper y la zona del collar del tobillo.
Nike Pegasus 38, opinión
Empiezo primero con lo que se mantiene en este modelo. En esencia, las Nike Pegasus 38 mantienen exactamente la misma suela y media suela de las 37.
Es decir, toda la media suela de las Pegasus 38 sigue siendo de material React, una de las espumas de Nike. Firme pero reactiva, no tanto como ZoomX, y más durable en el tiempo. Además, el React aquí se combina con cápsulas de aire Air Zoom en el interior.
Están en la zona del medio pie, en la zona adelantada donde debería aterrizar la pisada. Estas cápsulas se comprimen e impulsan en cada transición. Este sistema no ha cambiado nada respecto al año pasado y, al igual que ocurría en las 37, las Pegasus 38 también tienen diferentes presiones en esas cápsulas de aire dependiendo de si usamos el modelo de hombre o el de mujer.
La cápsula AirZoom en hombres tiene una presión de 20 psi.
En el modelo de mujer la presión es de 15 psi.
Para distancias variadas, desde 5 y 10K hasta Maratón.
Para entrenamientos diarios y tiradas de 6 min/km a 4’30’’/km
Zapatilla neutra.
Corredores hasta 80-85kg de peso.
Drop 10mm
Peso de 304 gramos (talla 44).
Peso, suela y drop de las Nike Pegasus 38
Tampoco hay cambios en la suela, que sigue teniendo el mismo patrón con caucho. Tiene buen agarre, buena tracción y la densidad de pads es alta en toda la superficie. Pese a eso, mantiene una buena flexibilidad de la zapatilla.
Mismo drop de 10mm en las Nike Pegasus 38 (de 33 mm en el talón a 23 mm en el medio pie) y un peso de 304 gramos en mi talla 44 (10 USA / 28cm).
Diferencias y cambios: Pegasus 38 vs 37
Bien, tras todo lo que se ha mantenido intacto de un año a otro. ¿Cuáles son los cambios de las Pegasus 38? En esencia están en la zona del ajuste, el material del upper (toda la zona superior de la zapatilla) y la parte trasera.
No son pocos los corredores que no se sintieron cómodos con los profundos cambios de la 37: ajuste más estrecho del habitual, rozaduras en el talón, falta de sujeción en esa zona… pues eso es lo que Nike ha cambiado en las Pegasus 38.
Toda la malla superior tiene más grosor, es más agradable al pie, y deja un pelín más de espacio en toda la caja delantera. Ahora bien, en mi opinión, aunque es cómoda, me parece calurosa y si entrenamos en una zona en las que las altas temperaturas son habituales, es para tenerlo en cuenta. Se agradecería un upper más abierto y ventilado, además podría ahorrar gramos de peso.
Toda la zona de los cordones y la lazada me da la sensación que ha ganado amplitud, y eso es bueno. No es una zapatilla para pies muy anchos, pero es mejor que antes en ese sentido. Hay que darle unas cuantas salidas hasta encontrar el apriete correcto. Por cierto, la lengüeta es mullida, no se mueve del sitio y es más larga. Esto, junto con un collar del tobillo retocado, ayuda al cierre y sujección.
Nike Pegasus 38: review y conclusiones
¿Te gustó la edición anterior? Entonces las Nike Pegasus 38 te resultarán familiares, prácticamente iguales. Si aquellas te dieron algún problema de ajuste, en estas está la solución. Digamos que estás son las zapatillas que debían haber salido hace un año.

¿Corredor y entrenamientos tipo? En mi experiencia con ellas tras estas semanas, centraría las Nike Pegasus 38 en rodajes y entrenamientos diarios a ritmos tranquilos. Se pueden usar en sesiones más rápidas, umbrales y tempo, pero se nota que no está orientada a esos ritmos (por supuesto, con piernas funciona a cualquier ritmo).
Es una zapatilla de calidad a buen precio (generalmente en oferta). Bien construida, buenos materiales y son una apuesta segura para meter kilómetros.
